Sullivan University Faculty Professional Development Plan
(Approved by Academic Council 11/16/2017)

The Sullivan University Professional Development Plan, in compliance with SACSCOC Standard 6.5, will provide professional development for faculty in their role as:

TEACHERS

PRACTITIONERS

SCHOLARS

Examples include but are not limited to:

1. Academic citizenship

Examples including but not limited to:

-Membership on committees

-Mentoring new faculty, students, a Sullivan organization, etc.

-Faculty advising

2. Educational seminar participation, internal or external to Sullivan University

Examples including but not limited to:

-Discipline-specific in-service requirements

-New faculty member orientation

3. Additional formal training to improve faculty member’s knowledge and skills; or, additional coursework or professional development to improve expertise. Other coursework may be added at the discretion of a supervisor/dean.

Examples include but are not limited to:

1. Participation in industry or professional group: activity or leadership

Examples including but not limited to:

-Professional seminars

-Maintenance of professional credentials and/or educational requirements

2. Service to the profession/Service to the public

Examples including but not limited to:

-Pro-bono work, clinics within the faculty’s specialty area, community volunteer work, volunteer board membership, etc.

3. Publications: Publishing, editing, or submitting a work for an academic, trade, or public-interest publication.

4. Subject Matter Expert (SME) work

Examples include but are not limited to:

1. Conference presentation(s), internal or external to Sullivan University

2. Publications: Publishing, editing, or submitting a work for an academic or trade publication.

3. Participation in the faculty grant process

4. Peer review activities, including journal editor or reviewer, dissertation committee member or Chair, etc.

5. Subject Matter Expert (SME) work

*Specific activities within each category are subject to evaluation between the faculty member and his or her Dean/Director.  Review and analysis between the individual faculty member and his or her Dean/Director will determine the appropriateness of each professional development activity consistent with each faculty member’s Professional Development Plan.
