CAT244 - Special Events Planning and Staff Management

Credit Hours: 4

Course Description

The purpose of this course is to provide the student with an overview and working knowledge of the event industry. The course is designed to acquaint the student with the new and emerging career opportunities within the event industry and to become familiar with the roles and responsibilities of the position of an event planner. Students are exposed to proposal development, professional presentations, strategic and tactical event planning, subcontractors within the industry, staff development and fiscal responsibility.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

Identify the scope, responsibilities and multidimensional nature of the event industry
Distinguish the makeup of needs assessments, feasibility studies, and project management techniques for events
Compare how event sites are selected and developed in accordance with needs and obligations of the event
Identify the goods and services required to meet the basic and functional needs of an event
Distinguish ways in which the contact between the event and its attendees is a customer service issue
Illustrate the ways interactions between the attendee and the environment enhance the event experience
Describe steps in the development of an event agenda and the procurement of performance providers
Distinguish how and why supplementary programs can support an event
Identify procedures and options for providing food and beverage services in an event
Distinguish the framework for procurement management and human resources management for events
