IDB201 - Studio I

Course Description

This introductory studio explores the factors involved in information gathering, the programming process and the concepts of spatial organization through creative problem solving. Students will learn how to manipulate the Principles and Elements of Design in developing concepts, ideation, diagramming, and design analysis in both two-and-three-dimensional representations to create interior spaces which adhere to programmatic requirements. Both written and verbal communication techniques as well as presentation development will be stressed.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

• Analyze history as it relates to interior design, architecture, or other forms of art to create design solutions
• Analyze information and research to solve complex problems to inform design solutions
• Apply the design process through the use of programming, pre-design, quantitative and qualitative programming, schematic design, and design development
• Use theories related to the impact of the built environment on human experience, behavior, and performance to the design solution
• Apply wayfinding, human factors, ergonomics, inclusive, and universal design principles to the design solution
• Apply appropriate laws, codes, standards, and barrier-free and accessibility regulations and guidelines to the project
• Select light and colors for the interior environment that positively impact health, safety, and well-being
• Specify appropriate furnishings, objects, materials, and finishes work together to support the design intent
• Design interior spaces in two- and three- dimensional visual representations that utilize the Elements and Principles of Design and a variety of visual communication techniques and technologies
• Develop interior contract documents including drawings, detailing, schedules, and specifications appropriate to project size and scope
• Defend a design solution in written and verbal form and demonstrate critical listening skills
