IDB261 - Codes, Standards and Compliance

Course Description

A study of codes as they relate to the built environment is provided as a foundation in understanding of zoning restrictions and the application of federal, state, and local building codes. This course addresses issues such as egress, materials, planning, accessibility, and other factors related to public health, safety, and welfare. Sustainability guidelines, industry specific life safety codes, egress plans, detection and suppression, standards and accessibility guidelines as a part of regulatory process included in an interdisciplinary design process will also be studied.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

• Identify code related terminology
• Recognize code organizations, Standards Organizations, and Federal Agencies that govern the design of interior projects
• Identify building codes (International Code Council, International Building Code, NFPA 101, Life Safety Code, National Electrical Code, National Mechanical Code, National Plumbing Code) as they regulate the construction of the build environment
• Recognize the regulations contained in the International Residential Building Code
• Recognize International Building Code classi?cations
• Identify the types of construction as determined by the International Building Code
• Identify the components of a means of egress
• Identify the components of fire and smoke resistant assemblies
• Distinguish the differences in federal, state, and local codes
• Develop a fundamental understanding of how building codes address occupancy, egress, materials, planning, accessibility, and other factors related to public health, safety, and welfare
• Explore industry specific life safety codes, egress plans, fire detection and suppression standards, and accessibility guidelines as a part of regulatory process
• Demonstrate an understanding of the Americans with Disabilities Act
• Recognize the testing agencies and procedures that regulate the use of interior materials and furniture
