IDB311 - Kitchen and Bath Studio II

Course Description
This is an upper level studio/lecture elective course focusing on the design of kitchens and baths and the completion of a comprehensive set of drawings and specifications. An in depth understanding of NKBA (National Kitchen and Bath Association) standards will be included as preparation for NKBA certification.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Apply previously learned knowledge from Kitchen & Bath Studio I to advanced projects through demonstration of those competencies

Gain knowledge of advanced concepts in kitchen and bath, multiple cooking design, theme, and specialty kitchens, then develop a design concept theme related to client’s needs and style

Exhibit mastery of the design process from initial client contact to successful completion, including post-occupancy evolution
-
Identify tangible and intangible project constraints by observing the space, obtain pertinent design information from architectural blueprints, and take comprehensive and precise measurements using NKBA recommendations in order to translate dimension and building fixtures accurately

Identify building materials and evaluate building mechanical systems to satisfy the design criteria

Become aware of limitations for the aging population in addition to understanding human ergonomic considerations

Gain knowledge of NKBA Access Planning Guidelines and apply universal and accessible design criteria using information from NKBA Industry Technical Manuals to meet client needs

Adhere to safety criteria recommended by NKBA and incorporate applicable building code requirements and environmental considerations into the project to ensure public health, safety, and welfare

Use NKBA Graphic and Presentation Standards to communicate the design solution clearly to the client and trade representatives, and interpret that solution by developing a design concept statement substantiating the project to the client

Properly prepare contract documents using written and graphic presentations to define and communicate the obligations of all parties according to NKBA business tools such as the NKBA Standard Form of Agreement

Generate clear and concise presentations based on research

Defend both verbally and in written form a project solution
