IDB431 - Portfolio and Critque

Credit Hours: 4

Course Description

In this course, students must compile a working, professional portfolio in an adaptable format based on industry needs and specialization. Faculty will offer guidance in selecting and preparing of work in a variety of formats and in further developing previous course work. At the end of the course students must have a resume, working web site, marketing materials, and a digital portfolio. Students must participate in required professional critiques and submit revisions as requested by the department.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

• Apply previously learned knowledge of commercial interiors from Studios I, II, and III
• Examine the many different aspects of specialty care, from ambulatory care (e.g., medical offices, wellness centers, and daycare/respite) to long-term care (e.g., assisted living, rehabilitation, and hospice) to inpatient hospital facilities
• Apply the full range of functional, aesthetic, and psychosocial considerations involved in designing spaces that enhance the quality of personal care delivery in order to better serve the needs of people
• Examine sensitivity to the issues and needs of special populations and consider the therapeutic effects of environmental factors for space planning and specifying furnishings and finishes
• Recognize the applicable structural and mechanical building systems, codes, regulations, and specialized equipment required in various types of care settings
• Apply universal design standards using accessibility guidelines, including wayfinding and special ADA issues unique to the built environment
• Demonstrate bubble diagrams, block plans and space planning to formulate the best usage of the interior space in designing a large project
• Design with Computer-Aided Design technologies
• Apply project phase deadlines and reviews that are established to prepare them for the organizational skills needed in the interior design field
• Generate clear and concise presentations based on research
• Defend verbally and in written form a project solution
