MGT711 - Organizations and External Environments

Course Description

This course analyzes the behavior of organizations and how they adapt to and make strategic choices in their external environments. The course draws upon cross-institutional theories and empirical studies and focuses on the ecology of organizations, how internal characteristics condition external relations, and how environments influence internal processes.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

Locate, synthesize, and save scholarly articles
Identify dominant literature in the field of organizational theory
Evaluate organizational theory literature by synthesizing articles and identifying key points, strengths, weaknesses, and comparisons with other scholarly research
Lead and participate in course discussions
Increase your theoretical, research, writing, and conceptualization abilities by introducing a problem and developing a literature review
Sharpen your skills as both a researcher and peer reviewer to prepare for both individual research and collaboration
Apply theory to practice by explaining an organizational or industry problem through the lenses of organizational theories
Demonstrate academic integrity and correctly use APA standards for citing the work of others
Organize research articles using Perrla
Construct a theory-based paper suitable for conference presentation
Provide critical, constructive feedback in a double-blind peer review environment
Review literature in the field critically
Develop your own framework for understanding multiple research strands of organizational theory
