Course #MSS144 - Medical Laboratory Procedures I

Course Description

This is a class designed to introduce the student to the clinical aspects of their profession. Some areas covered include training in vital signs, pulmonary function testing, asepsis/infection control, and sterile procedures in which third-party simulations will be utilized for application. Students will address nutrition and special dietary needs of patients. Body systems specific to content will be reviewed and assessed.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Identify concepts of medical asepsis and infection control.
  2. Prepare and assist with physical examinations.
  3. Identify and perform basic concepts of pulmonary function testing.
  4. Prepare and assist with minor office surgeries demonstrating sterile technique.
  5. Instruct patient according to special dietary needs and concerns.
  6. Demonstrate vital signs through simulations.
  7. Identify various body systems as applicable to content.
  8. Demonstrate adherence with OSHA bloodborne Pathogen Standard.
