MSS234 - Medical Laboratory Procedures II

Course Description
The primary focus of this course is for the student to learn and practice procedures used in the clinical setting to include those concerning the care and use of the microscope, methods of specimen collection, blood counts and differential smears, hematology, and blood chemistries.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Identify basic care and use of the microscope
- Identify theories and methodology for performing basic diagnostic testing
- Apply adequate specimen collection and processing techniques after giving patient instructions relative to laboratory testing procedures
- Demonstrate thorough patient charting in medical record as a result from testing performed
- Evaluate supply order needs
- Obtain specimens and perform CLIA waived testing in hematology and chemistry

Discipline (Program) Specific Information
Students must successfully complete all required individual competencies prior to completing this course. In some courses, additional programmatic competency evaluation is required. With CAAHEP programmatic requirements, students are required to demonstrate competency by achieving a minimum of 80% on the designated course competencies. Students who score less than 80% on the competencies will not pass the class regardless of their grade status on other items in the course. Additional attempts will be available through 12 noon on Friday of week 10.
A minimum of 70% (“C”) is required to pass the course for the overall grade.
The student must successfully complete all of the following competencies prior to completing this course. Competencies may be completed as an independent check off, as a component of another competency check off, or evaluation by means of course exams.
