This course combines theory and experiential practice based community theory and family theory utilizing the research process and nursing process to establish evidence-based practice to meet the healthcare needs of the individual, family, community, and/or population. The student is introduced to concepts of epidemiology, environment, diversity, and social-economic conditions. The student focuses on health promotion, health maintenance, education, disease prevention, and coordination of care. The student learns the application of community and family health principles through experiential learning activities. A variety of community healthcare settings will be explored to assess the role of the baccalaureate nurse including the role of the community health nurse as a healthcare provider, and advocate for public policy, and a promoter and protector of public health. Links between health policy and clinical practice will be explored.
